Get the best reliability with domestic heating systems
When it comes to domestic heating, reliability is everything. Reliable heating systems ensure that the comfort of the home remains intact, but efficient pumps also go a long way to provide this. Pumps are responsible for 10% of the total electricity in the world, simply due to the fact that many of them run inefficiently. With a high-efficiency solution, however, you will not only bring savings to your customers, you will also reduce their environmental footprint.
Putting the saving of energy into perspective
Putting the saving of energy into perspective, we need to look further into the numbers.
An old functioning pump might do the job but uses potentially up to 17 times the energy of a new Grundfos pump.
We take the offset in an old UPS 25 60 180 running on a constant curve speed III using 84 W* in comparison with an ALPHA2 25 60 180 running in AUTOADAPT using 5 W*.
The math is then simple. 84 divided by 5 = 17.
It is possible to go as low as 5W due to the efficiency of the pump and operating it with a differential pressure control mode (utilising that the speed of the circulator is modulating).
The more technical explanation is to be found in the below formular. A heating system needs to provide 4,6 kW for heating up a mid-terrace house from the mid 80’s*. Different factors such as insulation, dimensioning and outside temperature of course also play a role in the usage. The heating is provided with radiators and at ΔT of 20 °C. And the system flow can be calculated as:
V[kg/h] = Q[kW]/c[kWh/kgK]x∆T[k] = 4,6/0,001163x20 = 202kg/h ≅ 0,2m3/h
The old UPS circulator is set in setting III (speed III – which is much more than needed but what often is seen in installations) to deliver the needed flow and consumes 84 W. The new high-efficiency and controlled ALPHA2 is set in proportional pressure setting I – which in this example can deliver the needed flow. Here it only consumes 5 W. To give an example we go back to the mid-terrace house from the mid 80’s above and calculate the savings on electrical energy when changing to a new ALPHA pump.
∆E[kWh] = (PAwg.,UPS - PAwg.,ALPHA)/1000 × T = (83,5-4,6)/1000 × 5000 = 394,5 kWh
∆Price[EUR] = ∆E × u = 394,5x 28,9/100 = €114
The cost of buying and installing a new ALPHA pump is € 450, and with a yearly saving of €114 the new pump has earned itself in less than 4 years. (Based on an electrical energy price of € 28,9 per 100 kWh*.)
So, there might be heat in every room of the house and nothing to complain about, but it is expensive and inefficient.
NOTE: Since the demand for heating remains the same this is not taken into consideration in this calculation. Obviously, there potentially will be gains in controlling the room temperature (less fluctuations leading to reduced energy) as well as potential lower return temperature to the boiler (improves the condensing leading to less energy consumptions).
