Electrodeionization for ultrapure water
Electrodeionization (EDI) is a proven technology for producing ultrapure water. It works by polishing demineralised water to achieve very low levels of conductivity and silica. Using a combination of ion exchange membranes, resins and electricity, EDI continuously regenerates without the need for chemical dosing or regeneration downtime — making it a reliable alternative to conventional mixed bed polishers.
Common applications of EDI
Basic features, high reliability
Grundfos EDI range is based on a modular design principle, making it easy to select the right capacity for your application with flow rates up to 26 m3/h.
The standard design of the EDI includes key components that support reliable operation and ease of use - all mounted on a robust stainless steel frame.
Flexible options to match requirements
Our EDI units are built on the same robust design principles as our standard plants, but can be fully customized to meet your specific application.
PLC Control for seamless water management
With a PLC-controlled EDI unit, you can monitor and manage not only the EDI but your entire water treatment system. The PLC is housed in a control cabinet with a user-friendly touchscreen interface. Various alarms can be set for high conductivity, low product flow, concentrate flow and electrode flow.
Higher flow capacity
Customized EDI configurations enable flow rates of up to 60 m³/h. This scalability ensures that even large-scale applications with continuous high-water demand are met without compromising water quality. High-capacity systems are especially valuable in power generation, pharmaceuticals and large-scale process water production, where reliability and consistent performance are essential.
PP pipe system
Choosing a polypropylene (PP) piping system offers excellent resistance to corrosion and temperature variations. The IR-welded pipes provide high impact strength and reliable thermal resistance, ensuring long service life and durability under demanding operating conditions, even with frequent temperature fluctuations or aggressive cleaning routines.
Advanced instrumentation
EDI units can be equipped with specialized monitoring and control equipment tailored to your needs. From conductivity transmitters and flow sensors to additional quality monitoring, advanced instrumentation delivers precise, real-time data for optimized operation and preventive maintenance.
Optimising EDI Capacity
To significantly enhance the performance of the EDI system and maintain low silica levels, it is beneficial to remove CO₂ after the reverse osmosis (RO) stage and before EDI. This can be effectively achieved using a membrane degasser, which helps reduce CO₂ concentrations and supports optimal EDI operation.
